Hey, it’s a really great day here as well…thanks for the letter.
Days like today make me realize how great of a life the bum, or migrant worker has. All day long, working outside, not a care in the world. (I recently read a book by Eric Hoffer who was a “bum” as well as an intellectual. He’s written many volumes on the socio / political movements of people in America since the 40’s. So, if you ever get a chance you should check out “Truth Imagined” by Eric Hoffer.)
Maybe the next step up (as far as freedom goes) would be the farmer. He can work outside all day at his own leisure. His own property gives him everything he needs to survive. He can work along side his family all day as well (if he so chose) not to mention…EVERY day would be a “bring your dog to work” day.
Such a life is far removed from the hustle and bustle of suburbian DC. People here leash their dogs, and imprison them behind glass windows. Your average Alexandrian is so suckled by the state, that they cross the street while talking on their cell phone. They’re so confident that the power of the law will restrain any vehicle from failing to yield, that they remain willingly oblivious to their surroundings.
What a shame. Alexandria offers an abundance of beauty if one were to take the time to appreciate it. Beauty that is especially vibrant on days like today.
One day, I’ll have the luxury of turning my guns into plows, and laying down by a riverside somewhere…but until that day comes…I’ll remain here, in a place I really don’t want to be, doing a job I really don’t want to be doing, in order to serve a president I really don’t like…all the while remembering the beauty in life that people like Eric Hoffer see on a daily basis.
Have a good one Uncle Eddie!
